Commissioned by the champion of modern music in the United States, Elizabeth Coolidge, Les rèves de Jacob was written in 1949 and scored for oboe and four stringed instruments. In its five movements, Milhaud depicts stages in the life of the Old Testament Jacob, from the book of Genesis. The composer indicated that the oboe serves as the divine and it is interesting how he could take an ordinary .....

Classical | EAC | Flac+Cue+Log+ Scans | CD1: 60’53, CD2: 54’45 , CD3: 48’08 | 765.04 MB

Released: March 26, 1996 | Label: Dynamic Italy

Cimarosa was an expert at writing lighthearted opera buffa that zipped along. Much of this music sounds very much like his better known IL Matrimonio Segreto, coming clearly out of the same stable, but it has its distinctive elements. Here the forces of the Festival Valle D'Itria come up with a sparkling production. The singing and the orchestra come across as excellent, the conductor Eric Hull keeping things moving with a light touch that keeps it all together. The singers keep the music zipping along, and when it turns more serious, Alla Simonischvili, the lead soprano, and the others handle it well. Well recorded, especially considering that apparently we have some sort of mixture of only two straight-through live performances, and well performed this set offers a good deal of pleasure if not any profound musical experience. I found it worth hearing and having . The booklet gives the libretto with English translation and a useful essay.

This eight-CD set captures Miles Davis's second great quintet at its fiercest, loose with both the blossoming of familiarity between the players and the broadness of its attacks on the mostly well known tunes the group called during two nights at Chicago's Plugged Nickel in 1965. And you can hear it all, from "The Theme" that closed the quintet's sets to multiple, radically different takes of several tunes. Davis formed this band with just its heated potential in mind, opting for youth in Wayne Shorter's tenor sax, Herbie Hancock's piano, Ron Carter's bass, and, especially, Tony Williams's unlocked rhythmic energy.

Folk/Medieval Metal

In Extremo (Latin: At the Edge) is a German medieval metal band originating from Berlin. The band’s musical style combines metal with medieval traditional songs, blending the sound of the standard rock/metal instruments with historical instruments (such as bagpipes, harp, hurdy-gurdy and shawm). Versions of well-known traditional/medieval ballads make up the main part of their repertoire, but the band has written an increasing share of original material in recent years. Their own material is written in German, whilst the traditional songs are in a variety of languages, including Gaelic, Spanish, English, Norwegian, Swedish, Icelandic, French, Estonian, Galician, Hebrew, Latin, Occitan and Old High German. The Berlin band itself has raised the bar for her eleventh album "Kunstraub" set very high.

This record, Nuevo Mundo, is a classic testament to creativity of the highest order. In the music contained within it we have a volcanic confluence of modern American music, Peruvian folk motifs and the all-pervasive African roots of both musics. And what Alegria does is funnel the musical lava through his horn whereby he makes a statement that is raw and harking to an ancient future so new that although there are touchstones of the historic past there is also something elementally new, unheard before… and altogether breathtaking.

Johann Sebastian Bach's profound faith led him to construct a veritable cathedral in which the listener is overwhelmed with feeling. The Saint Matthew Passion is one of the greatest monuments of polychoral composition. The two ensembles respond to and complement one another, adding further emotional weight to the work. It must not be forgotten that throughout Bach's life, while he was writing compositions that corresponded to his professional obligations and his wish to glorify musical instruments, he had been carrying this Passion within himself, thinking about it - and with all his incredible humility - as his greatest work, written at the height of his maturity. It should also be remembered that it was Mendelssohn who resurrected this monumental work almost a century after it was written. Since then it has had an enormous impact throughout the world, including in countries such as Japan, which were not in principle receptive to its strong spiritual message.

This old (1990) and thoroughly old-fashioned production truly is Verdi as Verdi should be done. The orchestra in black, elegant Riccardo Muti in white tie and satin lapels, traditional sets, almost no milling around on stage by the chorus, no hint of nudity, no singers lying on the floor or leaning into the walls for their arias, huge voices and gorgeous costumes ... Or perhaps it should be gorgeous voices and huge costumes, to accommodate the lovers Arrigo and Elena ... singers standing stage front, feet planted foursquare, arms extended to expand the rib cage, projecting gorgeously even to the cheap seats in 'paradise'! Mingus In Greenwich Village may not win him admirers or offer much insight about his music, but the documentary offers a powerful look into the soul of the legendary bassist. Then again, it may come as little shock to those familiar with his autobiography "Beneath The Underdog," where he plays loose with facts and seems to focus more on his torturous relationships with women than his music. The 58-minute black-and-white film, shot mostly by a University of New York student, centers on the evening wait in November of 1966, interspersed with a few performances and clips of events related to Mingus' comments.

That Afel Bocoum is the protégé of Ali Farka Toure is apparent as soon as you hear his guitar work--there's the same fluidity and muscle in his lines and a very similar raw, bluesy feel to the playing. But, unlike Toure, that's the only place you'll find something that sounds like the blues. Bocoum's music is far more African than that of his mentor, full of unison singing or call and response between his voice and a female chorus. While Alkibar might be less immediately accessible to Western ears, it's still a powerful record. Bocoum has depth in his voice and resonance in his writing, which appears completely timeless, the slave to no fashion--African or Western--at all. Toure has obviously chosen his successor well. --Chris Nickson

While Mike Nichols' 1966 film of Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? gets more frightening every time you watch it, Alexander North's score to the same film gets more consoling every time you hear it. Nichols' film, particularly the performances by Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, has scenes of terrific intensity, but North's score, though faithful to what's on screen, has a tenderness, even a sweetness, that transforms the ultimate meaning of the film. Part of it is North's characteristically evocative orchestration with some cues delicately scored for guitar, celesta, bass clarinet, harpsichord, and a pair of harps, while others are scored for spare almost spooky winds arrayed against soothing strings. But most of it is North's soaring melodies and brooding harmonies -- and especially his big-hearted main theme. By prefiguring the film's reconciliatory ending, the solace offered by North's score transfigures all the horrors enacted between Taylor and Burton.

This album is the latest of several recordings in which pianist Fred Hersch solos or joins forces with some highly intelligent, advanced musicians to provide jazz renditions with a sophisticated, chamber music quality. Others are Hersch's Alone at the Vanguard (Palmetto, 2011); Leaves of Grass (Palmetto, 2005)—an ensemble composition based on Walt Whitman's poems—and two additional solo albums: Fred Hersch plays Jobim (Sunnyside, 2009) and In Amsterdam: Live at the Bimhuis (Palmetto, 2006). He also collaborated with trumpeter Ralph Alessi on Only Many (Cam Jazz, 2013).
